Super Robot Wars Y First Anniversary: New DLC and Series Highlights
Super Robot Wars Y, the latest entry in the Super Robot Wars mecha simulation RPG series, hit its first anniversary on August 28, 2026 — exactly one year after its release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC. The first new series title in four years since Super Robot Wars 30, it took four years to develop. The long development was largely due to an engine transition: the team moved from the in-house engine used since the Alpha series era through Super Robot Wars 30 to Unity, a shift made to keep the franchise sustainable for the future. The game also overhauled its screen design for clearer information display, with tactical commands returning to a list format after previously using ring commands.
Super Robot Wars Y’s scenario begins with a massive war threatening humanity’s survival, leaving Lelouch as Earth’s leader and Char as ruler of the space side. With their final battle approaching, Lelouch is assassinated before a crowd, ending the human conflict. The story centers on post-war chaos amid ongoing fights against alien invaders and new enemy forces. Brand-new series joining for the first time include SSSS.DYNAZENON, Godzilla S.P, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 1. Home console newcomers Macross Delta Movie: Passionate Walküre and Getter Robo Arc, previously seen in mobile titles, also join, bringing the total to over 20 works. An original robot, Dynazenon Relive, was conceived by director Akira Amemiya with setting art by designer Takeshi Nonaka.
The game features the series’ signature crossovers, including lively conversation scenes with the Gau-ma squad from SSSS.DYNAZENON. Many characters have unique battle-demo lines when facing Godzilla, with Heero’s “Target, Godzilla…!” a highlight. Unlike Super Robot Wars 30, where Quattro joined after dropping Axis, this game’s Char never performed the Axis drop, keeping his relationship with Amuro friendly and making him a dependable ally. Enemy factions including Braideen’s Yoma Empire, Macross Delta’s Aerial Knights, Getter Robo Arc’s Andromeda Ryu state, and Godzilla S.P’s Radon flocks can attack simultaneously. New systems include Assist Link, where non-combat characters like heroines support the squad using assist commands for HP/EN recovery and attack boosts, plus STG Memory Unlock, spending MXP earned from missions to unlock skill trees granting army-wide benefits.
On August 5, 2026, a new DLC called the Anniversary Expansion Pack was released. It adds cross-work combination attacks such as Elgaim Mk-II & Billbain and Combattler V & Braideen, along with Super Robot Wars Z protagonist Crowe Burst and the Re-Brasta T unit. With a strong roster, fresh systems, and anniversary content now available, Super Robot Wars Y remains a compelling pick for mecha RPG fans — definitely one to check out for anyone who missed it at launch.
