Starfield’s Major ‘Free Passage’ Update Transforms Space Exploration

Bethesda’s space RPG Starfield is receiving what may be its most significant update since launch two and a half years ago. The ‘Free Passage’ update, scheduled for release on April 7, 2026, fundamentally reworks the game’s space exploration systems according to journalists who have previewed the changes. Alongside this major update, the PS5 version of Starfield will also become available, marking a new phase for the ambitious title. Bethesda studio head Todd Howard has indicated that this is just the beginning, with more surprises to follow in the future.
The ‘Free Passage’ update addresses one of the most criticized aspects of Starfield’s initial release: the disjointed nature of space travel. The update completely restructures this system to allow free movement within star systems without loading screens. Players can now fly between planets seamlessly and encounter random points of interest during travel. Ships can accelerate toward blockade points while using autopilot, allowing players to leave the cockpit and move freely around their vessel during transit.

According to an IGN journalist who attended a 1.5-hour closed-door demonstration at Bethesda’s studio, the update significantly enhances the experience for both existing players and newcomers. While it doesn’t address core issues like the main story’s pacing or dated character interactions, it provides meaningful improvements to post-game content and makes player interactions more fluid and natural. The studio has focused on creating more engaging endgame activities that maintain player interest.

For players who enjoy outpost construction and ship customization, the update offers a more refined experimental sandbox. Ships now feature improved targeting systems that automatically lock onto objectives and slowly circle them to prevent overshooting. This enhancement makes space navigation more intuitive and less frustrating during combat and exploration scenarios. The update will be available across all platforms including the newly launched PS5 version, demonstrating Bethesda’s continued commitment to supporting Starfield long-term. For a game that initially divided fans with its ambitious scope, this substantial update represents a promising step toward realizing its full potential.
