PS6 Reportedly in Deep Development with AI Frame Gen and Gen5 SSD


Despite Sony remaining officially silent on next-generation hardware, reports surrounding the PlayStation 6 are becoming increasingly detailed. According to gaming media outlet MP1ST, the PS6 has entered a fairly advanced stage of development. Sony is reportedly working on AAA content for both PS5 and PS6 simultaneously, while also investing in cloud technology, artificial intelligence, and storage performance. The company is said to be developing a so-called “next-generation social application” alongside upgrades to streaming and multitasking features, suggesting a system designed for more than just raw gaming performance.
According to the report, Sony is running current-gen and next-gen projects in parallel, with both 2D and 3D AAA titles planned to launch on PS5 and PS6. This indicates a cross-generation strategy similar to the PS4-to-PS5 transition. Separately, Sony is reportedly collaborating with an external studio on a third-person immersive horror game built with Unreal Engine 5. The title features an advanced progression system and heavy use of motion capture technology. The project’s name and developer remain unannounced, though speculation points to Sony-owned Firesprite as a potential candidate, with no confirmation yet.

On the hardware front, the PS6’s storage system is expected to see a major leap. The report states that Sony has been developing next-gen streaming infrastructure for approximately three to four years, with plans to adopt PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs. For context, the PS5’s current Gen4 SSD delivers sequential read/write speeds of around 7,500 MB/s and 7,000 MB/s, while Gen5 can reach 14,900 MB/s and 14,000 MB/s — nearly double the throughput. In terms of AI, Sony is reportedly researching frame interpolation pipelines for next-generation platforms, building on the PSSR upscaling technology seen in the PS5 Pro. This could enable AI-driven frame generation, significantly improving animation smoothness without relying solely on raw hardware power.

The report suggests Sony is not simply stacking hardware compute performance, but rather leveraging AI and dedicated acceleration modules to extract greater visual quality and efficiency gains. The company is actively recruiting AI and machine learning talent to build more advanced tools for the PS6. With game development and underlying technologies already moving forward in tandem, all signs point to the PS6 being well beyond the conceptual stage. This strategic emphasis on AI-driven performance rather than brute-force specs is a direction worth watching — if the reports hold true, the next generation could redefine what console hardware can achieve through intelligent software processing.
