Overwatch BlizzCon 2026: Doctrine Debuts as Sombra and Roadhog Rework
BlizzCon 2026, held on September 12-13 in Anaheim, California, delivered a wave of major announcements for Overwatch. Blizzard Entertainment unveiled a brand-new support hero named Doctrine, while confirming that Sombra and Roadhog will receive significant reworks. Following the reveal, the development team’s Alec Dawson and Ben Bell took part in a joint interview to break down the new content. The presentation focused heavily on shifting the game’s meta and continuing to support both new and existing heroes.
Doctrine is an aim-based support hero whose main weapon damages enemies and heals allies, similar to Ana. Crimson Veil reduces incoming damage while allowing a blink, and Vital Drone grants allies both a health and attack speed buff, which the developers say is powerful alongside high fire-rate heroes like Sera, Bastion, and Soldier 76. The key mechanic is Enhance, which upgrades the next ability used: enhanced Crimson Veil enables flight, enhanced Vital Drone applies its buff to Doctrine himself, and an enhanced weapon fires a large piercing projectile. Enhance holds two charges on cooldown.
Sombra moves to the support role, trading away her DPS lethality while preserving her identity. Her healing tool, Hotfix, grants instant and over-time healing totaling 200 health over 12 seconds. Her Virus becomes Cyberspace, a field that heals allies, damages enemies, and applies a 50 percent healing reduction debuff. Roadhog keeps his Chain Hook, but his main weapon shifts from a single shotgun blast to a two-round burst. A new right-click, Trash Compactor, absorbs enemy projectiles for two seconds and throws them back as a trash ball.
The developers state that Vital Drone’s strength will place Doctrine at the front line of the Season 5 meta. They emphasize that adding heroes while caring for existing ones remains their ongoing policy. Map reworks are guided by voting data and problems such as harsh chokepoints or limited defensive cover, as seen in the recent Paraiso rework. Details about the Season 5 conclusion are still being kept secret, though the team promises a genuine surprise and special content for next year’s Season 1. For Overwatch fans, the scope of these changes makes Season 5 one to watch closely.
