NetEase Reveals Chinese Folklore Extraction Shooter Gui Ying Cang Feng

NetEase has officially announced Gui Ying Cang Feng (诡影藏锋), a first-person extraction shooter steeped in Chinese folklore and horror themes. The game was revealed today with a cinematic trailer and opened registrations through its official website. Alongside the announcement, the developer confirmed that a closed beta test dubbed Cang Feng Test will begin on August 7, with recruitment now open for players who wish to experience the title early. The game marks NetEase’s latest foray into the extraction shooter genre, blending traditional Chinese supernatural folklore with the familiar loot-and-escape gameplay loop.
Unlike conventional extraction shooters, Gui Ying Cang Feng removes the shrinking play zone mechanic. Instead, players are placed on a 15-minute timer to search for treasures, solve traps, confront malevolent spirits, and locate an exit before time runs out. The game supports both three-player squads (four teams, up to 12 players) and solo play (eight teams, up to eight players). Extraction is the only path to victory, while hesitation and greed may leave players trapped in the haunted realm forever.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game emphasizes photorealistic visuals to bring Chinese folk horror to life. The developers highlight a design philosophy where everyday objects conceal deadly dangers — peeling paint on ancient temple pillars, flickering shadows at corridor corners, and paper figures that shift when not directly watched. Supernatural elements inspired by Chinese urban legends include masks that cannot be removed, coins embedded into flesh, and umbrellas draped with human faces. The environment is described as a living entity that watches and lures players toward their doom.

Gui Ying Cang Feng features an arsenal of traditional Chinese cold weapons including blades, swords, spears, fans, and halberds, each with unique combat properties. The combat system emphasizes prediction and reaction — victory depends on reading an opponent’s movements and deciding whether to block, dodge, or strike first. Players assume the role of Tongxuan Institute agents, each with distinct abilities, and can approach encounters through magic, brute force, stealth, or strategy. Pre-registration rewards include a permanent limited Peach Wood Sword skin, with community milestones unlocking additional gear including full purple equipment sets and exclusive gold-tier items if registrations surpass 10 million. This ambitious title is certainly one to watch for fans of Chinese folklore and extraction shooters alike.
