Metal Gear Solid Delta Marks First Anniversary as Remake Retrospective
Metal Gear Solid Delta (Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater), KONAMI’s remake of the 2004 stealth classic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, celebrates its first anniversary today, August 28. The title originally launched on August 28, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Adapted from the original directed by Hideo Kojima, the remake presents the story that serves as the origin of the entire series. Naked Snake, the operative who would later be known as “Big Boss,” takes center stage as protagonist, beginning his journey with a solo infiltration into hostile territory.
The game is set in the Soviet Union in 1964. Snake, a member of the CIA’s special forces unit FOX, attempts a solo infiltration of Soviet territory amid the Cold War. His original mission is to recover weapons developer Sokolov. However, his mentor The Boss suddenly appears and defects to the Soviet side, knocking Snake into a ravine and carrying Sokolov away alongside Colonel Volgin of the military intelligence agency GRU. Once Snake recovers, he is handed a new mission: rescue Sokolov, destroy the weapon he developed, and eliminate The Boss.

The remake was developed with the goal of faithfully recreating the original experience, though it is not without changes. Compared to the PS2 original, the graphics have been dramatically renewed, with overhauled character models and animations. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the jungle and forest stages look strikingly realistic. The game also features both a new third-person camera style and the classic top-down legacy style, which players can switch between during gameplay. As in the original, colorful characters appear throughout, including series regular Ocelot, the mysterious EVA, and the members of the Cobra Unit.

Wildlife capture returns from the original, letting players catch and eat animals to restore stamina, with Snake voice actor Akio Otsuka delivering expressive reactions such as “Umai!” (“Delicious!”) and “Mazusugiru!” (“Too awful!”). The remake is also packed with series-style quirks, from meta dialogue to gravure posters and hidden minigames. A free update released on October 30, 2025 added FOX HUNT, an elimination-style survival mission supporting up to 12 players in two-person teams, where ghillie suits drive hide-and-seek showdowns. Another title launched on August 27, 2026, and the anniversary article suggests revisiting Delta after clearing the two games it includes. As a faithful yet visually striking return to the series’ roots, this remake remains well worth experiencing.
