Horizon Steel Frontiers MMO Confirmed for Early 2027 on PC and Mobile

Korean publisher NCSoft has officially confirmed in its latest financial report that Horizon Steel Frontiers (地平线:钢铁边境), the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Horizon universe, will launch in the first half of 2027 on PC and mobile platforms. Originally revealed at the G-Star gaming exhibition in November 2025, this title marks the franchise’s first foray into the MMORPG genre. The project is being developed in partnership with Guerrilla Games, the Sony-owned studio behind the original Horizon series, ensuring continuity with the established lore and visual identity of the beloved franchise.
Horizon Steel Frontiers takes place in a new post-apocalyptic region known as the “Dead Ground,” with environments drawing inspiration from the landscapes of New Mexico and Arizona. The storyline runs parallel to the original Horizon games, shifting the setting from Aloy’s eastern journey to the American Southwest. Players will experience a different adventure unfolding on the same timeline as the main series, exploring a wholly new territory in this iconic world without directly following the protagonist Aloy’s path.

Unlike previous Horizon titles, players will not take on the role of series protagonist Aloy in this MMORPG. Instead, the game will feature a character creation system allowing players to build and deeply customize their own mechanical hunter. This design choice represents a significant departure from the single-player narrative focus of previous entries and aligns with the expectations of the MMO genre, where personalized avatars and player identity are central to the experience.

Currently, Horizon Steel Frontiers has only been confirmed for PC — available through NCSoft’s proprietary PURPLE platform — and mobile devices running iOS and Android. No PlayStation 5 version has been announced at this stage, despite the franchise’s strong history on PlayStation consoles. Guerrilla Games, which is also working on another multiplayer project titled Horizon: Hunter Gathering, is actively involved in development. Additional information about the game is expected to be revealed during future State of Play broadcasts. This is an ambitious expansion of the Horizon universe into MMO territory, and it will be interesting to see how the series’ signature机械 dinosaur hunting translates to a massively multiplayer format.
