GRAIN ROT Launches on PC With Chaotic 4-Player Co-op Extraction Horror
Swedish studio Beck & Branch Games has launched its new PC title GRAIN ROT, a cooperative extraction horror game now available for players. Set in a post-apocalyptic world of scorched wasteland, the first-person title has players controlling a battered wooden puppet exploring vast underground ruins. Following the extraction formula, players infiltrate specific maps, scavenge loot, and fight to survive and escape. The game supports up to four-player online co-op, and its procedurally generated underground environments promise a different experience on every run.
Players take on the mission of rebuilding their outpost, which serves as both base and home. The underground ruins decay the longer players remain inside, and their structure changes with each entry thanks to procedural generation. Venturing deeper yields greater loot, but it also accelerates the corrosion of the puppet’s body and increases the likelihood of encountering dangerous enemies. This risk-reward loop sits at the heart of each expedition.
A defining feature of GRAIN ROT is the “Life Spark,” which represents the player’s soul itself. Even after the body is destroyed, players can continue participating in the ongoing exploration as a Life Spark. In this form, they can guide allies, scout the surrounding area, and even revive by entering a new vessel if one becomes available. The mechanic ensures that cooperation continues even in death, keeping teams active throughout a run.
At the outpost, players can spend resources to strengthen their stats and craft furniture and items that give future expeditions a more favorable start. The four-player online co-op allows for straightforward teamwork, but the game also includes chaos-inducing elements such as dropkicking teammates. According to the store page, “a little prank can send your friend straight to the afterlife,” hinting at plenty of unpredictable moments.
