Gears of War: E-Day Launch Skips Several Classic Features

The Coalition has addressed fan concerns about Gears of War: E-Day (《战争机器:事变日》) in a new developer blog, explaining why the upcoming launch version will not include several classic series features. The studio noted the title is not simply reusing the technical framework of previous entries, but was rebuilt from what it described as “an empty hard drive” using Unreal Engine 5. This ground-up approach was intended to keep the campaign, PvE, and PvP experiences consistent across the board.
According to The Coalition, Gears of War: E-Day was not built by carrying over the technology from prior games. Instead, the team rebuilt the entire gameplay sandbox from scratch on Unreal Engine 5, starting from what it described as “an empty hard drive.” The studio said this decision was made to ensure the campaign, PvE, and PvP modes all deliver a consistent experience. Rather than patching new systems onto an older foundation, the developers opted for a clean slate to support the game’s long-term direction.

The rebuild means several franchise staples will be absent when the game arrives. The launch version temporarily excludes the meat shield mechanic, chainsaw duels, a number of classic weapons, private rooms, and leaderboards. The ranked versus mode will also arrive later, following October 13. The Coalition emphasized that these features are not gone permanently, but the studio has not shared a specific timeline for their return, only stating they will be addressed through post-launch updates or future titles.
Meanwhile, some players have questioned how development resources are being allocated, arguing that the team focused on cosmetic content such as pride badges rather than prioritizing core gameplay. Season 1 will run from the early access launch until December 1, and will feature themed events including Halloween and the series’ 20th anniversary. Rebuilding from scratch may deliver improved visuals and feel, but the absence of the meat shield and chainsaw duels leaves some veterans feeling the title is missing part of its soul. Whether these features should return quickly or wait for the new engine to mature remains an open question for fans.
