FF7 Remake Trilogy Director Shares Core Philosophy for Final Chapter

Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi has shared new insights into the core philosophy guiding the remake project and offered hints about the highly anticipated third installment. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Hamaguchi revealed that the overarching principle across all three games has been to progressively expand the scale of the experience rather than repeating what came before. While the final chapter has not yet been officially announced, development is underway and the team is focused on delivering a complete, ambitious conclusion to Cloud’s journey.
Hamaguchi explained that the trilogy’s guiding philosophy is that “each work gradually expands the scale of the game experience, rather than repeating the same experience.” Final Fantasy VII Remake established a deep story and character-focused foundation, while Rebirth expanded into a fully realized world map. The director emphasized that this project is not simply repeating the original game’s mechanics just because it is a remake. “Our project has always asked: how much can each new installment push the boundaries of the experience forward?” Hamaguchi stated.

The director gave fans a notable tease regarding the iconic airship Highwind, confirming that it will appear in the third game. “I think everyone can look forward to the Highwind’s performance — I know many people are curious about it,” Hamaguchi said. This mention has sparked significant discussion among the player community. Regarding development progress, Hamaguchi stated that work is proceeding on schedule and that the team believes this installment will confidently serve as the trilogy’s peak. He asked fans to wait a little longer for more details.

Notably, the original Final Fantasy VII will celebrate its 30th anniversary on January 31, 2027. With the publisher’s relatively open release schedule for this year and early next year, industry observers widely speculate that the third installment may launch simultaneously on PC and console platforms, potentially aligning with this milestone. If these predictions hold, players may get their first look at real footage of the finale during this summer’s major games showcase season. This is shaping up to be a momentous conclusion worth the wait for longtime fans of the series.
