Exit 8 Live-Action Film Gets First Terrestrial TV Broadcast August 28
Nippon TV has confirmed that the live-action film adaptation of indie hit Exit 8 (8番出口) will receive its first terrestrial television broadcast. The movie is scheduled to air in full, uncut, during the broadcaster’s “Friday Roadshow” (金曜ロードショー) timeslot on August 28, 2026. Based on the independently developed game of the same name, the film stars Kazunari Ninomiya in the lead role, with direction and screenplay by Genki Kawamura, a producer known for works including “Your Name.” The story centers on an infinite loop of terror and confusion unfolding within an underground passageway.
Kazunari Ninomiya stars as the film’s protagonist, while Genki Kawamura serves as both director and screenwriter. Kawamura is widely recognized as a producer on “Your Name.” among other notable projects. The adaptation follows the game’s core premise, depicting an endless cycle of terror and chaos set inside an underground passage, where the main character seeks a way out. The August 28 broadcast marks the film’s debut on terrestrial Japanese television, with Nippon TV presenting the complete, uncut edition during its Friday Roadshow programming slot.
The film is based on Exit 8, an anomaly-spotting walking simulator created by solo developer KOTAKE CREATE. Players must escape an endlessly extending underground passage by following three rules: do not miss anomalies, turn back immediately when one is found, and do not turn back when no anomaly appears. The goal is to reach “Exit 8.” The game is currently available on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and smartphones. It has established a genre known as “Exit 8-like” and surpassed 2 million cumulative sales worldwide.
A sequel within the Exit 8 series has also been released for Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC platforms. In addition, a new game from KOTAKE CREATE is currently in development for PC. With the original title surpassing 2 million sales and the film now reaching terrestrial TV audiences, the franchise has clearly grown well beyond its indie origins.
