Dark Friends: Wangsheng Institute Blends Mascot Horror with Childlike Innocence

A new entry in the mascot horror genre has arrived on May 1st, and early impressions suggest Dark Friends: Wangsheng Institute (黑暗密友:望升院) could become a standout title in the space. Unlike many horror games that rely on factory or theme park settings, this independent title sets its story inside a children’s shelter that outwardly promises healing and protection but conceals a much darker reality. Players take on the role of an amnesiac visitor returning to the institute, where peeling wallpaper, moldy corners, and scattered toys tell a grim story hidden beneath a friendly exterior.
Dark Friends: Wangsheng Institute distinguishes itself by prioritizing psychological dread over cheap jump scares. Players are equipped with a single ink喷射 gun that serves only as a puzzle-solving tool, dealing no damage to enemies. When threats appear, running is the only option, creating a persistent sense of helplessness. The weapon itself exhibits unsettling behavior, reportedly following players on its own after being set down. The game offers minimal guidance, requiring players to navigate maze-like environments including a library, projection room, bedrooms, and a kitchen while piecing together fragmented narrative clues scattered throughout the facility.

The game focuses on two distinct mascot characters. Giant Dog Josie initially chases players through corridors in a ferocious manner, but a dedicated interaction sequence reveals a deeper layer. Players must press Josie’s teeth in the correct order, mimicking a classic crocodile toy game from childhood. This bond culminates near the end when Josie transforms from pursuer to protector, intervening to save the player from the other mascot. In contrast, Pacifier Binchy presents as a gentle caretaker that guides players through eating and sleeping routines, but hides a horrifying dual nature. Beneath its pacifier facade lies a set of razor teeth used to self-mutilate when the player sleeps, symbolizing the shelter’s core contradiction.

Currently, only Chapter 1 has been released, offering approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of gameplay. The game follows a chapter-based release model similar to Bendy and the Ink Machine and Poppy Playtime. A notable feature is the inclusion of well-known content creators such as Lauren and Cory, who appear as真人 video recordings within the game, providing puzzle hints and adding a documentary-style realism to the horror atmosphere. With its distinctive art style, clever puzzle design, and effective sound work, the first chapter has already received positive reception. The editorial verdict: this is one to watch for fans of the mascot horror genre who appreciate atmosphere over shock value.
