Bloodborne R-Rated Animated Film Finds Its Director and Writer

Sony’s R-rated animated Bloodborne film, first announced at CinemaCon 2026 more than half a year ago, has taken a key step forward. Producer Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin confirmed to IGN that a writer and a director are now attached to the project, and that overall preparations are “progressing smoothly.” Beyond that, the production remains closely guarded, with no release date, full voice cast, or plot synopsis made public so far. Even so, the confirmation marks the adaptation’s shift from an announced project into active pre-production.
McLoughlin declined to identify the writer or the director now working on the film. He explained that the team is still keeping its creative lineup and story details strictly confidential. Speaking as a fan himself, he said he would love to make everything public, but that doing so would leave nothing to look forward to and would take much of the fun out of the process. The comments were given exclusively to IGN regarding the status of the adaptation.

McLoughlin argued that animation suits Bloodborne better than live action would. Drawing a comparison with Alex Garland’s live-action Elden Ring film, he suggested that a live-action version of that scale could cost as much as $600 million (~¥4.3 billion). Bloodborne’s abundance of surreal elements and otherworldly creatures, he said, would be “very cool” to present with animation’s full freedom, free from the constraints that come with green screen shooting.

Sony has not announced a release date, a complete voice cast, or a plot synopsis for the film. With the writer and director now in place, the R-rated animated feature has moved out of the announcement stage and into substantive pre-production. For fans who have waited years for a Bloodborne screen adaptation, this is a quiet but meaningful sign of momentum — one worth keeping an eye on as the project takes shape.
