Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake Director Explains Why They Chose the Fourth Entry
Ubisoft has officially announced Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remastered, and the reveal has brought both excitement and concern among fans. Many longtime players worry that the 2013 classic could lose its original charm during the remastering process. In response, Game Director Richard Nett of Ubisoft Singapore sat down for an interview to explain the development team’s philosophy and why the fourth entry was chosen for a remake. The decision, according to Nett, was almost a no-brainer given how well the title holds up against the franchise’s core pillars.
Nett explained that the team evaluated what makes the Assassin’s Creed brand special — different historical periods, compelling characters, and diverse gameplay experiences. Black Flag, he noted, checks every box. The protagonist Edward Kenway is one of the most memorable characters in the series, the Caribbean setting is captivating, and players can live as both a pirate and an assassin. Another key reason was the game’s age. While Black Flag still plays well today, Nett expressed confidence that the team could inject substantial new content into the experience.
According to the interview, the remake has been in development for approximately three years at Ubisoft Singapore. The studio’s biggest challenge has been updating the game’s technical presentation while preserving its original atmosphere. Nett emphasized that the soul of the game must remain intact. Even as certain gameplay mechanics evolve — such as the ability to crouch anywhere now — he wants players to feel that the experience of playing Remastered is exactly the same as it was back in 2013.
The remake is scheduled to launch on July 9, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. With the game carrying the dreams of countless aspiring pirates and Assassin’s Creed fans alike, the question remains whether Ubisoft can strike the perfect balance between graphical upgrades, gameplay refinements, and preserving the spirit of the original. With just under three months to go, the answer is not far off. This is certainly a title worth keeping an eye on for both longtime fans and newcomers to the series.
