Ace Combat 8 Preview: 1:1 World, New Cloud Tech, October Launch

The Ace Combat series has long stood alone in the flight combat niche, and new details from a hands-on preview of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Sphinx suggest it plans to stay there. Launched in 1995 on the original PlayStation, the franchise passed 21.5 million cumulative sales by 2025, with Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (2019) alone accounting for more than 7.5 million of that total. The upcoming entry is set in July 2029, a decade after the events of Ace Combat 7. Its story finds the Central Usea Federation (FCU) collapsing under war and economic strain, with the Republic of Sotoa launching a lightning invasion that nearly wipes out the FCU navy.
The preview reveals that the protagonist, a former pilot rescued by the old carrier Endurance, is ordered to inherit the legendary “Wings of Sphinx” call sign after its holder, Coup, dies fleeing an enemy ace. The title turns out to be an FCU propaganda campaign; Coup was an ordinary pilot whose record was entirely fabricated. Ace Combat 8 also drops the series’ traditional third-person cutscenes in favor of full first-person storytelling, with a zoom function for observing character details. The returning wingman command system lets players direct three Joker squad members via d-pad orders covering dispersed attack, concentrated attack, special weapons, and cover.

According to the preview, Ace Combat 8 builds its world at a 1:1 scale, replacing Ace Combat 7’s roughly 10-percent scale map with a 10,000-square-kilometer environment that results in longer transit times and more believable landmarks. Dynamic day/night cycles, thunderstorms, and sandstorms are included. The team also replaced the industry-standard trueSKY plugin with its own cloud engine, “Cloudly,” giving clouds physical and tactical value, such as water droplets and ice forming on the canopy. In one previewed mission, thick clouds disable radar entirely, forcing players to track enemy fighters by their smoke trails and contrails.

The preview highlights two standout missions. Mission 9’s land battleship, inspired by Godzilla according to producer Kazutoki Kono, is a roughly 450-meter vessel smashing through the capital’s skyscrapers, requiring players to damage its treads before concentrating fire. Mission 11 tasks players with destroying six super-heavy transports with eight rear propellers while enemy aces interfere. A new chain-destruction mechanic lets wreckage damage nearby foes, and aircraft can now carry two special weapons simultaneously. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Sphinx launches October 2, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. With its first-person narrative and propaganda-ace premise, this entry looks like one to watch for series veterans and newcomers alike.
