Xbox Tests Auto-Highlight Feature on ROG Ally X Handheld
Microsoft has begun testing a new “highlight reels” feature for its next-generation Xbox platform, currently available to internal testers on the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld device. The feature automatically captures and compiles gaming highlights during gameplay using the device’s neural processing unit (NPU). According to a recent blog post from Microsoft and reports from insider Jez Corden, this functionality represents one of several new experiences being developed for the upcoming Xbox hardware. The next-generation Xbox is positioned as a personal computer optimized for console-style gaming experiences.
The highlight reels feature leverages the device’s NPU to automatically identify and capture memorable gaming moments without requiring players to exit their current game or switch applications. This seamless integration aims to enhance gameplay fluidity by eliminating interruptions. The NPU, specifically designed for artificial intelligence workloads, offers advantages over traditional CPU or GPU processing for certain tasks. While NPUs are becoming more common in personal computers, this technology remains relatively novel for many gamers.
During the current preview phase, the highlight reels feature supports a limited selection of popular titles including Among Us, Elden Ring, Fortnite, Forza Horizon 5, Lies of P, Overwatch, and Palworld. Notably, Elden Ring is not an Xbox Play Anywhere title and cannot be obtained through the Xbox application, suggesting the feature has broad compatibility across different game launchers. Corden’s sources indicate that more games are supported during internal testing, with the compatibility list expected to expand as the Xbox team collects feedback.
The highlight reels feature is expected to launch officially for the Xbox Ally X within the coming months, though internal testers can already access it. The inclusion of NPU-dependent functionality confirms that the next-generation Xbox will incorporate this specialized processor.
