Xbox CEO Sets Ambitious Goal of 1 Billion Daily Players After Mass Layoffs

New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has laid out an extraordinarily ambitious vision for the company’s future, aiming to transform Xbox into one of the few global platforms serving over 1 billion people daily. This announcement comes shortly after Microsoft confirmed global layoffs that eliminated approximately 3,200 positions from the Xbox division. In an official statement, Sharma characterized the restructuring as necessary for Xbox to embrace a brighter future. While the scale of job cuts has drawn significant criticism, Sharma remains focused on a long-term growth strategy that she believes will reinvigorate Microsoft’s gaming business by 2027.
The sheer scale of this ambition has sparked widespread debate. Sharma noted that Xbox currently attracts roughly 1 billion active users annually, but achieving 1 billion daily active users represents an enormous leap. Industry analysts have pointed out the mathematical challenge, noting that the highest concurrent user count ever recorded on PC platforms was around 41 million. Reaching 1 billion daily users would effectively require multiplying that peak by over 24 times. Many observers have described the target as disconnected from industry realities, especially given the concurrent job reductions.

The juxtaposition of mass layoffs with an exceptionally optimistic growth forecast has drawn scrutiny from industry commentators. Critics argue that cutting thousands of jobs while promising explosive user growth sends mixed signals about the company’s immediate priorities. Sharma, however, maintains that Microsoft will increase its focused investment in the Xbox platform, with the goal of enabling everyone to create and connect through its ecosystem. The company has yet to provide concrete details on how it plans to bridge the gap between its current annual user base and the daily target.

Sharma expressed confidence that Xbox will return to a growth trajectory by 2027, though she did not outline specific milestones along the way. The gap between 1 billion annual users and 1 billion daily users is enormous by any measure. While the ambition demonstrates confidence in Xbox’s long-term direction, the lack of a clear roadmap makes this one of the gaming industry’s most debated corporate targets. Whether Microsoft can deliver on this vision remains to be seen, but the company has certainly set the bar remarkably high for itself.
