The Idolmaster Marks 21st Anniversary of Arcade Series Debut
July 26, 2026 marks the 21st anniversary of the original The Idolmaster arcade game, which first launched on this date in 2005. Developed by Namco (at the time), the idol training simulation game laid the foundation for what would become a massive multimedia franchise spanning sequels, spin-offs, smartphone games, anime, live concerts, and merchandise. The arcade original, often referred to as Akemasu to distinguish it from console versions, introduced players to the world of 765 Production, where they took on the role of a rookie producer guiding idols to stardom. Its unique cabinet design and innovative networked features set it apart from other arcade titles of the era.
The arcade cabinet featured a distinctive wide design with a touch screen display at its center. On the left side was a card reader slot for data storage, while the right side housed a coin slot and headphone jack. Players used two types of cards: a Producer Card for personal save data and Unit Cards specific to each idol group, meaning regular players often carried multiple cards. The cabinet was networked, allowing producers to compete in nationwide rankings. Gameplay involved selecting one of nine idol candidates at 765 Production and guiding them through lessons to raise parameters, auditions to gain fans, and ranking up before a strict time limit forced retirement.

One of the most memorable features of the original arcade release was the Mail Please service, which sent real emails from the idol characters directly to players mobile phones. These messages ranged from casual daily updates to reflections on audition results and personal motivations, creating a level of immersion that made players feel like genuine producers. Some emails even notified players of parameter boost time windows, effectively encouraging them to visit game centers during specific periods. This early integration of mobile phone connectivity with arcade gaming was ahead of its time and remains a fondly remembered aspect of the original experience.

The Idolmaster series has continued to expand in recent years. In May 2024, the sixth brand title launched as a smartphone application, and a new arcade game began operation in March 2025. To celebrate the 21st anniversary today, a special livestream titled The Idolmaster Series 20th Anniversary Thank You SP is scheduled on the official Idolmaster channel, looking back at the two-year 20th anniversary celebration campaign that ran from 2024. For fans of the series, this anniversary serves as a reminder of how far the franchise has come from its arcade roots to become a cultural phenomenon across multiple entertainment media.
