Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Celebrates First Anniversary
The HD remastered collection of classic RPGs Suikoden I & II has reached its one-year anniversary, having originally launched on March 6, 2025. The compilation brings together two beloved titles from the 1990s with modern enhancements for contemporary platforms. Based on the Chinese literary classic Water Margin, the series is renowned for its epic storytelling involving 108 companions and their intertwined destinies. The HD remaster marks the first major re-release of these games since their PlayStation Portable versions in 2006, making it a significant release for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
The Suikoden series draws inspiration from the Chinese novel Water Margin, focusing on characters who bear magical crests that shape their fates. Gameplay revolves around recruiting over 100 companions to build an army, with large-scale war events, tense one-on-one duels, and combination attacks between specific character pairs. The original Suikoden I launched in 1995 for PlayStation, followed by Suikoden II in 1998. Both games share a connected world, allowing players who experience them sequentially to witness character developments and story continuities between the two titles.
Suikoden I HD Remaster follows the son of General Teo McDohl, who inherits the Soul Eater crest from his friend Ted and becomes a fugitive from the Scarlet Moon Empire. Suikoden II HD Remaster centers on two childhood friends who each receive powerful crests but find themselves on opposing sides of a conflict. The HD remaster introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements including enhanced graphics, minimap display, auto-save functionality, and three selectable difficulty levels. Particularly useful additions are the dash function available from the beginning of Suikoden I, plus auto-battle and speed-up options during combat.
The collection is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC platforms, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for June 5, 2025. Looking ahead, a television anime adaptation based on Suikoden II is planned for 2026 broadcast. Additionally, a prequel game set four years before the events of Suikoden I is currently in development for mobile and PC platforms. With its thoughtful modern enhancements and upcoming related media, the Suikoden HD remaster collection successfully bridges classic RPG design with contemporary accessibility.
