Street Fighter 6 Producer Confirms Year 4 Will Focus on New Original Characters
Capcom has announced the Year 4 character update plan for Street Fighter 6, and contrary to expectations among fans hoping for returning veterans, the fourth year will prioritize brand-new original characters. The decision has sparked discussion within the community. Producer Shuhei Matsumoto recently sat down with Game Spark to explain the reasoning behind this strategic move, revealing significant demographic shifts in the game’s player base that influenced the development team’s direction.
According to Matsumoto, Street Fighter 6’s player demographics differ dramatically from previous entries in the series. While past installments primarily attracted core players aged 35 to 40, Street Fighter 6 has drawn a massive audience of players aged 15 to 25. This younger demographic now accounts for over 70 percent of the total player base. Matsumoto stated that the development team recognized that these new players show significantly higher acceptance and favorability toward original characters compared to legacy roster members.
Matsumoto also noted that it has been two full years since the last original character, A.K.I., was introduced. From a content update rhythm perspective, he explained that the timing was right to add another fresh face. More importantly, from a long-term IP development standpoint, continuously introducing original characters helps inject new vitality into the Street Fighter series and ensures the brand remains attractive to future audiences. The team sees this as essential for expanding the franchise’s reach beyond its existing fanbase.
Based on these multiple considerations, the development team ultimately decided to center Year 4’s roster around original characters. While this decision may disappoint some longtime fans who were hoping for the return of classic fighters, Capcom views it as a necessary strategic choice. The move prioritizes attracting a new generation of players and broadening the series’ boundaries over catering to nostalgic expectations.
