Sony Faces Backlash Over Physical Disc Phase-Out and PR Response

Sony has found itself at the center of growing controversy following an announcement that it plans to cease production of physical PlayStation game discs by 2028. The news sparked widespread backlash among gamers worldwide, with many expressing anger over the gradual shift toward an all-digital future. Despite the mounting criticism, PlayStation’s official channels remained silent on the issue for several days, offering no clarification or response to the concerns raised by the gaming community.
After an extended period of no comment on the disc phase-out announcement, Sony finally broke its silence — but not to address the ongoing controversy. Instead, the company published a 22-second promotional video showcasing a new product: the FlexStrike wireless fighting stick. The clip focused on tool-free quick-swap lever gates, making no mention whatsoever of the physical disc situation. This move was widely perceived as an attempt to change the subject while ignoring the community’s concerns.

The promotional video for the FlexStrike fighting stick drew over 18,000 comments within the first hour of posting, and that number has since surged past 60,000. The vast majority of responses were negative, with players accusing Sony of deliberately attempting to divert attention away from the disc controversy. Many commenters stated they would not purchase the peripheral, and criticized the company’s handling of the situation as both evasive and damaging to user trust.

Following the fighting stick video, Sony posted two additional messages on its official channels. Both attracted tens of thousands of comments, with criticism continuing to dominate the conversation. The company has maintained its cold-shoulder approach to the physical disc controversy throughout, relying solely on peripheral marketing to shift public attention. The overwhelming volume of negative feedback in under an hour makes clear that the community remains deeply unsatisfied with this response strategy. Whether Sony will eventually address the disc phase-out directly remains uncertain, but ignoring the backlash does not appear to be a sustainable approach.
