Shift Up’s Kim Hyung-tae: Stellar Blade Blood Rain Has Been in Development for One Year

Shift Up CEO Kim Hyung-tae has shared new details about the upcoming sequel Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, following its official reveal during the Summer Game Fest period. In a recent interview, Kim discussed the project’s development pace, current completion status, and the evolution of its combat system. The game was announced to the surprise of many, given how quickly a playable demo was shown after the original Stellar Blade’s release. Kim provided insight into how the team managed to produce such a polished early showing in a relatively short timeframe.
Kim revealed that Stellar Blade: Blood Rain has been in development for approximately one year from concept to the demo stage. He noted that the core development team has remained largely intact, with members showing significant improvement in their skills over the past year. The experience accumulated from the original Stellar Blade title has carried over smoothly, allowing the team to produce a presentable build at this relatively early stage. Kim emphasized that the team is prioritizing quality over strict deadlines.

When asked about the project’s specific development progress, Kim stated it is difficult to express in percentage terms. Some modules have progressed faster than others, while elements like the story script and later-stage levels are still in the design and refinement phase. He confirmed that early development work has concluded and the game’s overall framework is in place. The decision to announce Stellar Blade: Blood Rain at this time was made because the team believes the content has matured enough to give eager fans a proper update.

While Kim did not elaborate extensively on specific changes to the action system, he confirmed that the combat will continue to evolve. He drew a comparison, stating that if the protagonist in the original game was already powerful, the new character will be “overwhelmingly strong,” with each weapon and combat stance offering deep design space. The team is currently focusing on polishing stance-switching and combo mechanics, aiming to create richer combination logic that delivers more thrilling, strategically deep, and visually impressive battles. Stellar Blade: Blood Rain has not yet announced a release date, but Kim’s comments signal that development is progressing smoothly and the project’s scale and quality are worth anticipating.
