Resident Evil 2 Cut Content Revealed: Leon’s Drive and Croc Boss Fight
Recently revealed details about content cut during the early development of Resident Evil 2 have sparked widespread discussion among players. According to the report, had Capcom not removed these planned elements, fans might have experienced a fundamentally different classic. The abandoned concepts reportedly include a grander opening sequence, a larger Raccoon City map, and additional character interactions that never made it into the final release. The revelations offer a fascinating glimpse into how one of the most beloved entries in the survival horror series could have played out.
According to the original design, Leon S. Kennedy was not meant to appear directly at the police station. Instead, the early concept had him driving into Raccoon City from outside the city limits, eventually making his way to the station. The discarded plans also included a larger-scale map of Raccoon City, along with a full boss fight against a mutated crocodile. In the final version, the crocodile encounter appears only as a cutscene, rather than a playable confrontation.
Character interactions were also trimmed significantly during development. In the original plan, Leon and Claire Redfield were meant to share on-screen interaction scenes during the course of the game. Officer Marvin Branagh’s introduction was likewise completely rewritten. In the abandoned version, Leon and Claire would have witnessed Marvin being bitten by zombies first-hand. In the final game, players instead find Marvin already wounded on the floor when they first enter the police station, with the attack never directly shown.
These discarded settings have become a lingering source of regret for many fans, with the report suggesting the game nearly became something entirely different. Whether keeping Leon’s drive into the city, the complete crocodile boss fight, and more shared Leon-and-Claire scenes would have pushed the game’s reputation even higher remains an open question. It is hard not to wonder what this alternate take on a survival horror classic might have looked like, though the version that shipped remains a legend in its own right.
