Red Desert Developer Confirms DLC Development for Open-World Title

Pearl Abyss, the South Korean developer behind the open-world action adventure game Red Desert (红色沙漠), has confirmed that DLC content is in active development. The announcement came through the company’s Q1 2026 financial report, which also revealed impressive sales figures for the title. Since its launch on March 19, Red Desert has sold 5 million copies in just two weeks, generating approximately 266.5 billion KRW (roughly $180 million). Platform distribution has been evenly split between console and PC at around 50 percent each, while Western markets have driven over 80 percent of total sales.
In the financial report’s New Business Lines and Growth Strategy section, Pearl Abyss stated that Red Desert will continue to receive updates to enhance user satisfaction and drive new sales. The company explicitly mentioned that it is currently exploring various ways to elevate the game, including the development of DLC content. This marks the first official confirmation that Red Desert, a single-player open-world fantasy action title, will not end with its initial release but instead receive long-term content support. The studio promised to share more details once specific plans are finalized.

Following the announcement, players have been quick to analyze the game’s map for clues about potential DLC locations. Through boundary exploration, observant players have discovered multiple unused areas within the game world. One notable location, labeled Sunbaked Peaks, is currently inaccessible. Many community members speculate that this area could serve as the setting for a future story expansion. Since launch, Pearl Abyss has released major updates nearly every week, consistently refining the gameplay experience and earning widespread praise from the player base.

Pearl Abyss projects that Red Desert will generate between 644.1 billion and 734.8 billion KRW (approximately $440 million to $510 million) in total revenue for 2026. While the company acknowledges that Q2 revenue may see a decline due to the concentrated launch sales, it remains confident that consistent updates will maintain player engagement throughout the year. With the confirmed DLC development and the game’s strong commercial start, Red Desert appears poised for sustained growth. This proactive approach to post-launch content signals that Pearl Abyss is thinking long-term with its latest flagship IP.
