Pokémon Slow-Life Sandbox Game Launches Today on Nintendo Switch 2
The Pokémon Company has launched ‘ぽこ あ ポケモン’ (Pokémon) today, March 5, 2026, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the franchise’s first venture into the slow-life sandbox genre, offering players a completely different experience from traditional Pokémon games. Players control a Ditto that has transformed into human form, working alongside a special Sudowoodo (professor) to revive a once-thriving town that has become deserted and barren. The game represents a significant departure from the usual Pokémon formula, focusing on town restoration and peaceful coexistence with Pokémon rather than battling and collecting.
Players can create habitats by arranging specific numbers of grass, rocks, and other natural elements. Different Pokémon prefer different habitats like grassy fields or seaside areas. When Pokémon visit these habitats and players fulfill their requests, they may teach their special moves or offer assistance. Pokémon abilities have practical uses: Bulbasaur’s ‘Leaf’ move can grow grass in fields, while Squirtle’s ‘Water Gun’ can moisten dry ground. Players can also transform into Pokémon like Lapras to swim in the ocean or Dragonite to fly through the air, accessing previously unreachable areas.
The game includes two building methods: construction where Pokémon assemble buildings, and freeform block stacking. A crafting station allows players to create furniture and toys from collected materials, which can be gifted to Pokémon or used to improve town aesthetics. Furniture recipes expand as players discover them or meet certain conditions, and different furniture attracts different Pokémon. Multiplayer supports up to four players in a dedicated ‘Blank Town’ area separate from the single-player story mode. Hosts can invite guests for cooperative building and hide-and-seek, though guests cannot add Pokémon to their Pokédex or take collected items home.
Several special Pokémon variants appear in the game, including a Rotom in a mini-component system that changes background music when given CDs, a Cookstache (Yokubaris) that cooks for everyone, a pale-colored Pikachu with drooping ears, a moss-covered Snorlax with flowers growing on its head, and a colorful Smeargle that uses its tail like a paintbrush. Pokémon Center Online launched merchandise including a pale Pikachu LED light, human-form Ditto plush, pale Pikachu plush, and moss-covered Snorlax plush starting at 10:00 AM today. With its innovative approach to the Pokémon universe and extensive sandbox mechanics, this game offers a refreshing alternative for fans seeking a more relaxed Pokémon experience.
