Korean developer Pearl Abyss is maintaining an unusually aggressive post-launch update schedule for its open-world title Red Desert. Since the game’s release, the studio has been delivering new features every week while actively responding to community feedback — a rarity for premium-priced games built on modern engines like the proprietary BlackSpace Engine. This commitment has drawn attention from both players and industry observers, raising questions about how long such a pace can be sustained.
Pearl Abyss public relations and marketing director Will Powers addressed these questions during Summer Game Fest in an interview with Dexerto, stating that the updates will not slow down anytime soon. “As long as players demand it, it will continue,” Powers said. He noted that while this approach is uncommon for buy-to-play titles, it functions as a form of marketing strategy. “Continuous post-launch support and content updates give back to the community and players who invest their time, while also generating free word-of-mouth promotion. Rather than spending money on advertising, we prefer to put it into expanding the game’s content.”
According to Powers, Pearl Abyss’s motivation goes beyond marketing considerations. The fundamental reason the studio operates this way is its core belief in giving back to its community. “Without the community, there would be no Black Desert. Without Black Desert, there would be no Red Desert. We live and die with our fans,” Powers stated. By adhering to this philosophy, Pearl Abyss is challenging the broader AAA industry standard, where most developers do not maintain such frequent post-launch support for premium games. The studio’s promise to keep updating as long as players want it sets a high bar for competitors.
Pearl Abyss is currently working on main storyline improvements aimed at addressing one of Red Desert’s most criticized aspects. Additionally, a downloadable content expansion pack is already in planning stages.
