Onimusha: Way of the Sword Reaches 90% Positive Reviews Post-Fix

Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first mainline entry in the classic series in roughly twenty years, has seen its positive review rate on the PC platform climb past 90 percent. After a turbulent launch period, the action title has gradually won back player approval. As the fourth mainline installment, the game represents a notable return for the long-dormant franchise, and the recovery in reception indicates that post-launch fixes have addressed the early technical issues that affected part of the player base.
The game is set in Kyoto during the early Edo period. Players take on the role of Miyamoto Musashi, who wears the Oni Gauntlet and fights against the Genma army. The character’s facial model is based on the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune. This historical backdrop continues the series’ established blend of Japanese history and supernatural warfare, placing its protagonist directly against a demonic opposing force in a period setting.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword preserves the series’ signature Issen counter mechanic while adding new options. These include Crush Issen, Chain Issen, and a Blaze gauge, which together enrich the action-driven back-and-forth of combat. The additions build on the timing-based parry system that has long defined the franchise, giving players more ways to exploit openings during encounters with the Genma.
The title launched on September 4, with first-day sales surpassing one million copies. That performance lifted the series’ total sales to ten million units. At launch, however, some PC players reported startup crashes, which caused a brief decline in reviews. Once the developer completed its fixes, the game’s reputation steadily recovered, culminating in the current positive rating above 90 percent. For a franchise dormant for two decades, that turnaround is a promising sign.
