Name of the Night Demo Launches, Explores 2000s Arcade Music Culture
Indie development team Yoake Lab has released a demo for its new novel game, Name of the Night (夜の名前), on October 1, 2026, for the PC platform. The text adventure is set in a game center in a regional city in the year 2000 and is built around arcade music game culture. Its story follows the memories of two girls who were absorbed in arcade music games and centers on a “communication notebook” used for exchanges within the game center. The demo lets players experience the game’s opening story and includes a specially implemented sound room where a portion of the background music can be heard in high quality.
The narrative hinges on the game center’s communication notebook. Players read the entries from that era alongside the protagonists, catching a glimpse of mid-Heisei game center culture through the sensibilities and feelings recorded by its players. The protagonist, seeking the truth behind an incident that once occurred at the game center, reunites after ten years with a game center friend to recall those days and untangle the painful emotional misunderstanding that stood between the two. The artwork is drawn in different styles for the years 2000 and 2010, portraying the mid and late Heisei periods in regional Japan.

Scenario, text, and sound direction are handled by Kei Ichimura, a writer specializing in music games and their surrounding culture. Graphics and overall direction, production, and design are led by Mametaro Yazawa, known for 少女の亡国 and Re:メタモルフォーゼ・キャンディーナ. The soundtrack features music made for the game by .THi (Hiroshi Takeyasu), also known as General HIRO, who has handled sound production since the dawn of arcade music games, and TAG, who has worked as a sound director and composer on globally popular dance music games.

The demo lets players follow the events leading up to the incident that sparks the story and its mystery while experiencing a world set in a game center of 2000, and a “sound room” is specially included for high-quality BGM sampling. The title is also set to join a limited-time demo event running from October 19 to 26, 2026, an occasion for upcoming games to reach a wider audience. Name of the Night is planned for release in the second half of 2026, with pricing still undecided. For those who know the history of music games, the soundtrack’s pedigree alone makes this one worth watching.
