Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Interview Highlights New Combat
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the large expansion for Capcom’s 2027 title Monster Hunter Wilds, made its world-first playable debut at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which runs from September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Capcom’s booth also showcased a playable demo of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Wilds. In a related interview, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, director Takuro Hiraoka, executive director and art director Kaname Fujioka, and Switch 2 version producer Genki Sunano shared fresh details about the expansion’s design and development.
According to the developers, the new Boost Bracelet mechanic began with a return to Monster Hunter’s action fundamentals, giving hunters a way to create their own openings. When the boost gauge fills, players gain new tactical choices. Fujioka noted the concept emphasizes each weapon’s strongest moments rather than patching weaknesses, though special Boost Activation Actions may bend those limits: a greatsword can close distance instantly in that brief window. Most weapon types ended up with offset (clash) actions. New moves cited include the Sword & Shield’s Blade Oil Slash and the Hammer’s Diving Smash.

The newly revealed monster Araketo lives in the new field Kumoi Ruins and moves in coordinated packs. Its boss individual issues commands through calls, and subordinate members then gather and act together. The team started from the idea of a monster with a social, organized pack, the opposite of Wilds’ Doshaguma, whose members act individually with strong egos. Araketo was designed as a charging monster that compresses air in its wings and jets forward like a jet aircraft, with its head and knuckles hardening for the charge. Its attacks have clear tells, making offsets easier to land.

Ascendance’s founding concept is to be an orthodox evolution of Wilds, building on what players enjoyed while thoroughly improving areas raised in feedback, including UI and option settings. Tsujimoto said the team aims to provide rewarding endgame content at release, including content that encourages strengthening equipment before challenging it. Guardian-style rescue equipment is not currently planned, though measures for newcomers are under consideration. The Switch 2 version took over a year, with work beginning around June 2025. The main monster remains unrevealed, and the newly shown Gundoraja is confirmed not to be it. For hunters invested in Wilds, this expansion is clearly one to watch.
