Mega Man: Dual Override Reveals Proto Man Gameplay Details
Mega Man: Dual Override, the latest entry in the long-running Mega Man series, is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 and introduces a dual-hero system that lets players choose between two protagonists. Alongside Mega Man, Proto Man (known as Blues in Japan) will be a playable character. His gameplay footage was first shown during a Nintendo Direct broadcast on September 9, 2026. In September 2026, Capcom held a media preview event dedicated to Proto Man, where details about his unique mechanics and combat feel were revealed. Capcom notes the preview build is still in development, so specifications and names may differ in the final product.
Proto Man returns to the numbered series for the first time since Mega Man 10. His basic movement, jumping, and sliding are almost identical to Mega Man’s. As in Mega Man 10, jumping lets him raise a shield to guard incoming bullets. Custom Chips and the Override system also work for him, just as they do for Mega Man. His Buster has a shorter range and cannot reach distant enemies. His charge attack produces an energy mass in front of him, similar to Blues Strike, while jumping into a charge attack fires a thin, burner-like beam that slices enemies.

Proto Man carries a second gauge separate from his health, filling as he uses charge attacks and shield actions. The gauge drains over time, but if it maxes out, Proto Man overheats and cannot use shield actions for a while. Players can manage it by avoiding constant use or pressing the L2 button for a Cool Down. The Triangle button triggers shield actions confirmed in the preview: a circular shield throw, a forward Shield Jet dash, and an upward Rising Shield uppercut, all usable on the ground or in the air. Capcom Spotlight on September 16, 2026, noted Mega Man gains special weapons from bosses, while Proto Man earns additional shield actions and new abilities.

The playable stage was the new boss Twinkle Girl’s three-part stage, the same one offered in Mega Man’s preview. Shield actions hit hard, breaking through armored or shielded enemies, with heavy hitstop on charge attacks. Compared to Mega Man’s all-around style, Proto Man favors aggressive power plays, though overuse causes overheating. When fully charged, his Override fires a close-range exploding shot rather than Mega Man’s Final Charge Shot, and his transformed form remains hidden beyond glimpses of his arms and legs. Capcom will host a playable exhibit at Tokyo Game Show 2026 from September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe, where attendees can try Mega Man across Twinkle Girl’s first three stages. Proto Man’s risk-reward design makes him one to watch.
