League of Legends to Add Early Surrender for Griefing Teammates

Riot Games has officially announced a new feature for League of Legends that will allow players to vote to end games early when teammates are intentionally feeding or sabotaging matches. The system is designed to address a long-standing frustration in ranked play where players feel trapped in unwinnable games due to toxic behavior. When the system detects deliberate feeding or game-ruining conduct, the affected teammates can initiate a vote to surrender without penalty. This targeted mechanism aims to reduce unnecessary suffering for players stuck in matches that have effectively been decided by one player’s negative actions.
The feature is expected to launch in late 2026 Season 2. When the system identifies a player intentionally feeding or engaging in other disruptive behavior, their teammates gain the ability to vote for an early game termination. The violating player cannot participate in this vote. If the vote passes, the teammates will not lose any League Points (LP) and can exit the match cleanly. The opposing team receives full LP as if they had won a normal match. Only the violator and any players queued with them will lose LP and face additional independent penalties.

Following the announcement, some players expressed concerns about the feature potentially ending games too early, as some matches that appear hopeless in the early stages can still be turned around. Others worried about innocent players being punished alongside toxic teammates. Riot developer Chris Roberts clarified that players on the same team as the violator will not lose LP and their hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR) will remain unaffected. Affected players simply need to start a new game without bearing any long-term consequences from the ruined match.

The new feature will undergo further testing to verify its effectiveness before full implementation. Riot Games developed this system specifically to tackle the common ranked scenario where one player sells all their items, repeatedly runs into the enemy team to die, or otherwise sabotages the game. The company aims to provide a solution that protects the majority of players from the negative impact of a single disruptive individual. While the system represents a significant quality-of-life improvement, its success will depend on careful implementation and ongoing community feedback during the testing phase.
