GTA 6 Adds Suppression Fire Mechanic for Non-Lethal Police Escapes

Rockstar North development lead Rob Nelson has shed light on new gameplay mechanics in Grand Theft Auto VI, following a report from Japanese outlet Famitsu. The studio confirmed the addition of a “suppression fire” mechanic that allows players to escape police pursuits without killing officers or innocent civilians. Instead of aiming directly at police, players can intentionally shoot off-target or fire warning shots to intimidate officers and buy time to flee. The feature is part of a broader effort to give players more non-violent options during chases.
Nelson explained that this mechanic is designed to make player actions more consistent with the protagonist’s situation and narrative logic. By deliberately missing shots or firing warning shots, players can create a deterrent effect that frightens police and secures extra time to escape. The developer stressed that if the protagonist engages in reckless gunfights without being cornered into a desperate situation, it would look highly unnatural. Players can still choose to fight head-on, but this will affect their criminal record, and the police in this installment are far from easy opponents.

Beyond car theft, robbing stores has become a new way to earn money. Nelson noted that when a player enters a store with a gun drawn, nearby bystanders may call the police, and if the player walks out the door after the robbery, officers are likely already waiting outside. However, with only a two-star wanted level, escape remains possible. If the player wore a mask during the robbery, they can remove it before police arrive to lower their recognizability, then holster the weapon and steal an inconspicuous old car. Since police know the player’s outfit but not the new vehicle, careful driving could still shake them off.
Clothing details also add realism to escapes — if the player steps out of the car without changing clothes, police may still recognize them by their outfit. Overall, the report suggests that by taking appropriate and restrained actions, players can successfully shake off police without harming anyone, offering more strategic choices for those who prefer non-violent playthroughs. It is a promising direction for fans of stealth-focused open-world gameplay.
