God of War: LAUFEY Reveals Character Details and Core Storyline

Sony has officially unveiled God of War: LAUFEY during its PlayStation State of Play presentation, introducing a major shift for the franchise. The new title places players in the role of Faye (Laufey), the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, rather than the series’ longtime protagonist. The announcement trailer quickly generated significant buzz across the global gaming community, and now official character profiles and story details have been released, offering a comprehensive look at what this ambitious spin-off entails. The game aims to fill in the blanks surrounding one of the most enigmatic figures in the modern God of War narrative.
Laufey, known in-game as Faye with the title Righteous Laufey, hails from the Frost Giant clan of Jotunheim and was the last guardian of the giants. She was the original wielder and creator of the Leviathan Axe before passing away from illness prior to the events of the 2018 God of War reboot. According to official character files, Faye was a hidden linchpin of the Norse saga, having single-handedly resisted the Aesir, led a giant rebellion against Odin, and once fought Thor to a draw at her peak. She also set up countless protective wards across Midgard to shield Kratos and Atreus. Hollywood actress Deborah Ann Woll has been cast as Faye’s voice actor.

God of War: LAUFEY’s story picks up immediately after Faye’s funeral scene from 2018. Instead of passing into nothingness, she awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife realm where gods and beings from multiple mythologies — including Norse, Egyptian, and Eastern pantheons — converge and vie for power. Faye learns that her protective barriers around Midgard are collapsing, leaving Kratos and Atreus exposed to Odin’s remaining forces. To safeguard her family, Faye must traverse the Everywhen, battle deities from various cultures, repair her wards, uncover the truth behind the giants’ extinction, and explore the complete origin of the Leviathan Axe.

Sony has confirmed that God of War: LAUFEY will be a permanent PlayStation 5 exclusive, with no plans for a PS4 or PC release. The developer has stated that development is proceeding smoothly, with further release details to be announced in phases. A new original character named Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, will serve as Faye’s guide throughout her journey across the Everywhen. Shifting protagonist focus to Faye is a bold creative decision that opens up fresh narrative possibilities, and fans of the series will likely be eager to learn more about her untold story when further updates arrive.
