Ex-Dev Says Sony Acquisition Saved Bungie as Destiny 2 Nears End
Bungie’s recent announcement that Destiny 2 will cease content updates after June 9 has sent shockwaves through the game’s community, but former employees claim the studio’s struggles were years in the making. According to an earlier report from Windows Central, Bungie confirmed that the game’s final chapter, titled “Triumph Monument,” will mark the end of active development on the long-running looter shooter. Former Destiny 2 developer Liana Ruppert has come forward with serious allegations regarding internal mismanagement at Bungie. Ruppert stated that executives were greedy, and that significant funds were never properly allocated to the Destiny project. “Before the Sony acquisition, Bungie had already fallen below the red line,” Ruppert said. “If we hadn’t been acquired by Sony, at least on the Destiny side, we would have been very close to shutting the doors.” These claims echo criticisms from other former employees during the 2024 layoffs, who pointed to long-standing management issues and poor resource allocation as persistent problems.
Despite years of declining player numbers due to slow updates and inconsistent content quality, the announcement of Destiny 2’s closure has galvanized the community.
