Destiny 2 Ends Live Service June 10, Fans Rally for Destiny 3
Bungie has announced that ongoing live service development for Destiny 2, the studio’s sci-fi looter shooter, will officially conclude on June 10. The game’s final content update, titled Victory Monument, will launch on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation platforms, bringing an end to a development cycle that has seen prolonged delays and diminishing content output in recent months. Although the servers will remain active in a static state, the end of new content marks a bittersweet moment for the millions of players who have supported the title since its 2017 debut.
In response to the abrupt conclusion of new content, the Destiny 2 community has mobilized through a Change.org petition calling on Sony and PlayStation to authorize the development of a Destiny 3 sequel. Sony acquired Bungie in 2022. The petition has already gathered more than 333,000 signatures. Notably, Bungie developers appear to be encouraging this fan initiative, urging players to log in on June 10. Some observers interpret this as a signal that significant player activity could demonstrate demand strong enough to influence Sony’s decision regarding the franchise’s future.
Destiny 2 community lead and senior communications manager Dylan Gafner recently posted a telling statement: Guardians create their own destiny. Longtime players recognize these words from the Vault of Glass raid, specifically the text that signals the damage phase. Fans have interpreted this as a subtle nod to the community’s ability to influence the series direction. Gafner further amplified community figure Zavalr’s call to action encouraging players to log in on June 9, and quoted Dylan Thomas’s famous refrain: Do not go gentle into that good night.
Despite the circumstances, the Victory Monument update itself is notably generous. This large patch will introduce and rework a substantial number of weapons and armor sets, refresh multiple activities, and add a new Pantheon raid challenge. For many players, this final content drop represents a proper send-off for the franchise. While viewing community petitions and a single-day player surge as a guaranteed path to Destiny 3 may be optimistic, the passion behind the effort reflects the deep emotional investment players have in a franchise that many feel deserves a better conclusion.
