Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag Remaster Launches with Progress-Wiping Bug

Ubisoft’s newly released Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Memory Reset has been hit with a serious bug that can erase hours of player progress, just as the game launches across PC and console platforms. The publisher has confirmed the issue and stated that a fix is currently in development. Game File journalist Stephen Totilo alerted players through social media, warning them not to abandon the “Templar Hunt” side quests midway through completion, as doing so reportedly triggers the bug with high probability. Totilo personally lost approximately five hours of progress due to this glitch.
According to Totilo’s account, the issue manifests specifically in the Kingston region. After completing several Templar Hunt side quests and then leaving the area to explore other regions, returning to Kingston to trigger main story progression causes a fatal conflict between the main quest and side quest lines. The game becomes stuck, leaving players with no option but to reload an earlier save, effectively losing all progress made since the bug was triggered. This makes the Templar Hunt quest line a dangerous endeavor for players who prefer to explore freely.

Ubisoft representatives have confirmed to Totilo that the development team has successfully identified the root cause of the bug. A patch is currently being prepared and will be delivered through a future update. The company has not yet provided a specific timeline for when the fix will arrive, leaving players to navigate the issue carefully in the meantime. The fact that the bug was quickly identified suggests a relatively contained technical issue rather than a systemic problem with the remaster’s codebase.

Totilo noted that aside from this significant issue, the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Memory Reset delivers an excellent overall experience, with new content additions that include several pleasant surprises. For players looking to jump in immediately, the safest approach appears to be completing the Templar Hunt quests in one sitting before progressing the main storyline, or simply avoiding them until the patch arrives. This is definitely a frustrating launch hiccup for what seems to be an otherwise solid remaster of a beloved pirate adventure.
